PRISMEDICAL Announces a New Contract with the U.S. Department of Defense
Napa, CA, September 1, 2004 — PRISMEDICAL CORPORATION announced today the award of a $2.7 million contract to develop a hand held system that can produce sterile saline at the point-of-use. The contract is the third and largest to date that the company has received from the Office of Naval Research (ONR). With the new award, PRISMedical begins product and manufacturing development of a system which will be the only portable device with the capability of producing sterile solutions from contaminated water.
Conventional sterile saline solutions are produced by large manufacturers and shipped directly to hospitals where saline is administered as an intravenous therapy or combined with a drug in the pharmacy and delivered by a doctor or nurse. This logistics chain does not address traumas which occur outside the hospital where the need for care is immediate.
“Our technology increases the speed and reach of trauma care by enabling caregivers to deliver sterile solutions at the point of injury. The need for this capability is urgent and world wide,” according to Mark Sizelove, President & Chief Executive Officer of PRISMedical.
The ONR invests in new early stage technologies that address unmet medical needs in the field. It has funded a large portion of the research phase of the sterile saline solution system and continues to express interest in the product and future PRISMedical products.
“This contract is a defining moment for the company, said Sizelove; we are transitioning from R&D to production with a large potential customer sponsoring our efforts toward commercialization.”
About PRISMEDICAL CORPORATION
PRISMEDICAL , a medical technology company founded in 1996, specializes in the development of hand-held medical systems that can produce sterile fluid therapies within moments of trauma or injury. These products can increase the speed and reach of rehydration and drug delivery by purifying even highly contaminated water. Speed is essential in survival situations where early treatment and care during transport can mean life or death for trauma victims. Reach is crucial for treatment and prevention of disease at home and abroad, or in case of emergency situations due to earthquakes, terrorism, and floods.
