Research Shows Backcountry Enthusiasts Most Likely
To Be Prepared For Emergencies

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.
– August 7, 2007 — PRISMEDICAL Corporation, manufacturer of the TRITON® M portable water purification system, knows the importance of being prepared whether you are at home or far off the beaten path. In a recent national survey of American adults on safety and preparedness, the company’s data showed that backcountry enthusiasts, international travelers and those who prepare for emergencies share the same concerns about the availability of safe drinking water. Furthermore, slightly more than one out of four respondents reported that they had become ill at least once as a result of drinking contaminated water.

The proprietary research showed that a significant portion of people who buy and use portable water filters and purifiers end up using them in a variety of situations. Although most commonly used by enthusiasts in outdoor activities in remote or wilderness areas, portable water filters appeal to a potentially greater segment of the population for use in the wake of natural or man-made disasters. Hurricanes, ice storms and floods can all cause a disruption in, or contamination of municipal and private water supplies. In emergencies such as these, household tap and well water should be treated the same as water from a mountain stream or lake.

When asked which emergency preparedness product was most likely to be purchased in the next 12 months, both groups placed higher priority on a water filter or purification system than on a 3-day supply of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), on bottled water, on hand-crank radios, or on LED flashlights and electric power generators.

According to the survey, another segment that has significant crossover with outdoor recreation and emergency preparedness is international travel. Consumers in this segment have a keen understanding of health hazards posed by contaminated drinking water, and they are savvy when it comes to technology and types of portable water filters and purification systems available in the market. Like their American Express cards, most will not leave home without one, particularly to areas where water quality is suspect.

PRISMEDICAL addressed the concerns of these three market segments in the design and development of its new TRITON M modular filtration system. The system incorporates modular filters that let the user select his or her protection level depending on circumstances and needs. The TRITON M is extremely lightweight and compact. It will fit easily in a pack, suitcase or emergency kit. Made of durable military spec ABS plastic, it is designed and built to withstand repeated use.

No matter what the situation or environment, those who purchase or intend to purchase water filters and purifiers have similar expectations. PRISMEDICAL’s research shows that among total survey respondents, just three key attributes account for over 75% of consumers’ preference, or choice share, when deciding which device to purchase. Highest influence comes from level of purification (39%), with price (21%) and taste/odor/clarity of filtered water (17%) rounding out the top three. To ensure these criteria are met, the TRITON M purification system uses proprietary and redundant filtration and purification technologies. TRITON M’s modular design makes it affordable and easy to maintain no matter what the use.

PRISMEDICAL Corporation specializes in the development of disposable, hand-held medical devices that provide pharmaceutical-grade water on demand at the point-of-use. The company has done extensive research and development for US Department of Defense and was the first to develop and market an FDA-approved product for producing Sterile Purified Water (USP) in the field without reverse osmosis or distillation.
