FAQs
Q: Why do I need a water purification system?
A: Because having safe water at all times and in all places is fundamental to maintaining human health. Also, we want our water to taste good. We designed the TRITON® M with the flexibility to allow our customers to effectively address all waterborne contaminants, while producing great tasting water, all in a modular, compact and low cost system
Q: Is the TRITON M system a filter or purifier? It is both, depending upon which system you choose and how you choose to use it.
A: Using the TRITON M Anti-Virus Treatment with the Hollow Fiber Microfilter (HFM) module, such as in a TRITON M1, allows the system to purify the water by inactivating viruses, while filtering out particulates, bacteria and cysts.
A: Using the same TRITON M1 without the TRITON M Anti-Virus Treatment allows you to filter out particulates, bacteria and cysts with the HFM module alone.
Q: Operation: Do the modules have to be connected in the right order?
A: Yes, we recommend that the modules, which are color coded and can be differentiated via touch in the dark, always have the HFM module placed last with the Carbon module first. If purchased, the Resin module is recommended in between the Carbon and HFM modules.
Q: Cold Water: How does cold weather affect the system?
A: Very cold water (lower than 55º F) effects the system by increasing the wait time for the Anti-Virus Treatment to be effective. Aside from that, cold weather plays no role. A water temperature/dwell time chart is included in TRITON M’s instructions for your reference.
Q: Hot Weather: How does warm weather affect the system?
A: Warm weather does not effect the system, but we recommend you keep the Anti-Virus Treatment as cool as possible; very hot weather (over 150º degrees for instance) can shorten the life of Anti-Virus Treatment dramatically.
Q: Shelf Life: What is the shelf life of the system?
A: We expect the HFM, Carbon and Resin modules to last approximately 5 years, if stored properly. The Anti-Virus Treatment and test strips have an earlier expiration date, so please check the packaging carefully to ensure you always have a current product. Our iodine tablets have a four year shelf life from the date of manufacture or one year after opening the bottle, whichever comes first.
Q: Source Water: Why does source water effect capacity?
A: Source water which is higher in suspended particulates, such as silt, shortens the HFM module’s life by clogging the system until back flushing is no longer effective.
A: Source water that is higher in chemicals and metals will more quckly exhaust the Carbon and Resin modules respectively.
Q: Patents: Do you have patents?
A: Yes, PRISMEDICAL has twenty-three issued and thirty pending domestic and international patents related to water purification and therapeutic agent delivery systems.
Q: Capacity: What is the capacity of the various modules and what do they do?
A: A HFM module will last approximately 500 liters (130 gallons) of water, depending upon the source water filtered. Our claim of 500 liters is based on independent lab NSF P248 testing, which used water as described in the report available on our web site. This .2 micron microfilter removes particulates, bacteria and cysts from the water.
A: A Carbon module will last approximately 250 liters (65 gallons) of water depending upon the source water filtered. Very high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can reduce module life. This module is used primarily to improve the aesthetics (taste and odor) of the water being filtered.
A: A Resin module will last approximately 125 liters (32 gallons) of water depending upon the source water filtered. The Resin module, which uses ION exchange, has the lowest capacity. The level of salts or metals in the filtered water lowers the capacity of this module. This module reduces heavy metals, (such as lead, arsenic and mercury), in the water being filtered.
Q: Standards: What is NSF?
A: NSF stands for National Sanitation Foundation. NSF develops water quality standards and tests against these standards in the US and abroad. You can read about NSF P248, that the TRITON M was tested against, on page 2 of this NSF publication. We believe you should only trust a water purification system that has test data to back up its claims.
Q: Purification: Why do I need to purify water?
A: Water may contain viruses such as Poliovirus and Rotavirus which can make you sick. The use of an Anti-Virus Treatment can help protect you from harmful viruses.
Q: Disinfectant: What is a disinfectant and how do we choose a disinfectant?
A: Our Anti-Virus Treatment is an EPA registered disinfectant which we use to inactivate virus that may be found in source water. We choose our disinfectants based on their proven efficacy for the expected short term usage our customers need. Iodine tablets, calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochlorite are common disinfectants used for this purpose. We continually explore other disinfectant solutions and will launch alternatives as there efficacy is proven and the EPA approves the usage.
Q: Hollow Fiber Membrane (HFM) Microfilter Technology: Why does the TRITON M use Hollow Fiber Membrane Microfilter Technology?
A: HFM microfilters are very effective at filtering bacteria and cysts harmful to human health. In addition, the TRITON M’s patented new HFM technology is very effective at filtering small particulates (larger than 2 microns) and delivering high flow filtration, due to its large surface area. This large surface area feature increases the system’s capacity and production speed over most other filter materials. The HFM requires much less back-flushing when compared to older technologies such as ceramic filters.
Q: Product: Does the Iodine-based anti-virus tablets discolor the TRITON M source water bag?
A: Yes, iodine tablets will discolor the bag, but this does not alter or affect the quality of the purified water. Iodine tablets are commonly used for disinfection without filtering to improve taste and you may notice a slight taste of iodine after a few dozen liters of water are filtered. This is not harmful to you, but replacing your activated granular carbon module will remove the iodine taste if you find it objectionable.
